MONTCEAU-LES-MINES, France - Floyd Landis, who took up cycling as a way of setting himself free from some of the strictures of growing up in a Mennonite family in eastern Pennsylvania, appeared to secure his first overall victory in the Tour de France.
Landis, riding for the Phonak team, finished third in the race's final time trial on Saturday but was well ahead of his closest rivals, all but ensuring that he will take the crown when the race arrives in Paris today for its final stage, a 95-mile ride from the village of Sceaux-Anthony that includes an eight-lap circuit on the Champs-Elysees.
