CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Unless Rusty Wallace gains a significant number of points on Dale Earnhardt on Sunday in the Mello Yello 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the chase for the rich NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship likely is over.
Earnhardt leads by a commanding 208 points, and if he emerges from the 28th of the season's 31 races with the margin remaining somewhere close to that, it'll be difficult to deny him a seventh title to tie Richard Petty's record.
However, fans not familiar with NASCAR's 20-year-old points system might figure the standings are skewered after checking the two drivers' victory totals.
