Whenever I tell people that as a native New Orleanian I have celebrated Mardi Gras every year since I was a baby, they stare at me shocked. Six months after Katrina's devastation, many of those who are astounded that New Orleanians would celebrate now do not understand how Mardi Gras is interwoven into the city's rich cultural fabric.
Contrary to popular belief, Mardi Gras is more than a drunken debauchery of tourists and college students, just as New Orleans is more than a few blocks around Bourbon Street.
For the children of New Orleans, Mardi Gras is - and may it always be - a magical season brimming with delicious ...
