John William Coltrane, soprano and tenor saxophonist, composer-arranger, was born on this day in Hamlet, NC. He had a great impact on contemporary music that was hard to measure. Like his contemporary Charlie Parker, it is evident that "Trane," as his friends called him, was instrumental in leading virtually all contemporary improvisational musicians to new and uncharted heights.
