Two Roman Catholic theologians, Daniel C. Maguire and Hans Kung, have sharply criticized the Vatican for its behavior before and during the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt. Vatican representatives vigorously opposed what they regarded as the conference's secular and antireligious bias.
In a September 8 address before a conference plenary session, Maguire, who teaches at Marquette University in Milwaukee, stated that because of its unyielding opposition to contraception and abortion "the Vatican has squandered its moral authority on issues where it has no privileged expertise."
