Jan. 21--In his last hours, 97-year-old Robert Howard "PeeWee" Carter heard live jazz in his house on Douglas Street in West Akron.

Daniel Risby, the drummer who grew up across the street from Mr. Carter, held his hand while Kenneth McCorvey played the old Duke Ellington number, Satin Doll, on Mr. Carter's Fender-Rhodes electric piano.

Risby and McCorvey, both musicians in their 40s, played with Mr. Carter for the last 10 years of his long jazz career that earned him and his saxophone the title of the Legend of Howard Street.
