The world's busiest man-made waterway, Germany's Kiel Canal, is set to become even busier.
Cutting across the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, the 100-kilometre canal links the Baltic and North seas, enabling ships to cut 520 kilometres from their trips. Last year, almost 43,000 ships carrying a total of 88 million tonnes of cargo used the waterway, compared to an estimated 18,000 navigating the Suez Canal.
