World consumer spending on buying and renting video software fell for the first time in eight years in 2005. Consumers worldwide spent $51.8bn on video software in 2005--down more than six per cent on the amount spent in 2004. Although DVD software spending rose to a new high in 2005, up five per cent compared with the previous year to $48.1bn, it proved insufficient to compensate for a 62 per cent fall to $3.4bn in VHS spending over the same period.
