Supporters of the HD DVD next generation video format have been actively--and successfully--courting independent European video distributors and authoring houses. Microsoft, keen to increase the use of its VC1 codec in hi-def disc authoring, is offering free access to additional authoring tools, training and support to selected European authoring houses that have already invested in the HD DVD authoring tools available from Sonic Solutions or Memory-Tech. Meanwhile Toshiba has been encouraging European independents to develop HD DVD titles for inclusion in local bundling deals.
