Since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, there has been a dearth of English-language historical publications on Iran, particularly at a level of generality suitable for the classroom or the nonspecialist reader. The author's purpose in The Persians is to fill this gap, and Gene R. Garthwaite's book comes at a time when interest in Iran is reviving, both because of political events and because Iranians raised in the diaspora are seeking to understand their origins.
