The author's purpose in writing this book and compiling key documents was to provide to the reader a clear, concise introduction to the reign of Byzantine emperor Justinian. In AD 476, the last Roman emperor was deposed, and Western Europe was plunged into a confused and often chaotic period. In the East, however, a vibrant empire flourished, and in 527, Justinian came to the throne in Constantinople.
