It is now generally accepted that Nazi Germany's eastern army (Ostheer) was deeply implicated in the atrocities committed on the Eastern Front. This carefully researched study of Army Group Center's rear area, with a special focus on the 221st Security Division and its midlevel officers, gives a detailed and nuanced depiction of the Ostheer's occupation policies.
