In Friedrich Schlegel's Brief uber den Roman the expression 'witzige Spielgemalde' is used to characterize the 'Arabeske', the pictorial equivalent of the novel as Schlegel defines it, the form which in his view subsumes all genres and embodies universal Romantic poetry.
