Josef Korner, the great Romantic scholar, may well have felt justified when in Marginalien: Kritische Beitrage zur geistesgeschichtlichen Forschung (Frankfurt a.M.: Schulte-Bulmke, 1950) he drew a direct link between the anti-Semitism of the German Romantics and what was to be called the Holocaust. He had of course written on the subject, but he had also survived Theresienstadt. Korner's position deserves our respect. Later commentators may, however, wish to distinguish social and religious ...
