SINCE it got its independence in 1966, Botswana has had five general elections, and will have its sixth this Saturday, October 15th. The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has won every election so far, and will pretty certainly win this one too. Led by Sir Ketumile Masire, it currently holds all but three of parliament's 34 seats.
After 28 years of independence, the opposition is still struggling to find a voice. It is split, and lacks the clout and resources of the BDP. Pasted on the walls in Gaborone, the capital, are BDP posters in glossy technicolour; next to them hang the drab-looking photocopies of the chief opposition party, the Botswana National Front.
