Amovement is afoot to get money into the hands of women determined to improve their lives and the lives of other women. It's called Mary's Pence. On Mary's Pence Day, Oct. 15, women around the country will celebrate what one can do on a shoestring with a little help from some friends.
Call it Cash-n-Carry Catholicism. Based in Chicago, Mary's Pence each year distributes checks of $1,000 to $3,000 for projects ranging from supplying Vietnamese refuggees with sewing machines to organizing women workers along the U.S.-Mexico border.
