MILWAUKEE, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Briggs & Stratton Corporation (NYSE: BGG): 
First quarter operations were significantly more profitable this year than last year.  Operating income more than doubled, primarily because of increased sales and higher production.  The strength in demand for engines that developed last year continued through the summer.  Engine unit shipments increased 12%.  In addition, anticipating that this strength will endure, we produced more engines that will be shipped to customers later in the year.  Lock unit shipments were strong as well, increasing 22%.  Net sales increased 15% to $228 million.
