A committee of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has begun work to develop a national standard on Sorting of Alphanumeric Characters and Other Symbols. The standard will address the needs of a variety of kinds of files, including catalogs, indexes, dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, and other alphanumerically arranged lists. It will also specify the arrangement of different types of graphic symbols, and should facilitate development and implementation of computerized bibliographies, indexes, and databases.
