Kathleen Battle's recital Wednesday evening at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall was one of those all-too-rare performances that give unalloyed pleasure.
Those hoping for diva display may have been disappointed: Battle's is a small soprano, and she evidently feels no compulsion toward pyrotechnics. The rest of us could only revel in a tone of still girlish sweetness, a most remarkable skill at spinning out unbroken threads of sound, and an extraordinary sensitivity to verbal and musical nuance.
The choice of music, actually, was quite restrained. Only in Purcell's "Hark, the ech'ing air" were there coloratura cascades, ...
