The town's sewage treatment plant is drastically overtaxed during wet weather and sewer officials believe they have found the culprit in the ubiquitous sump pump.
Those relatively inexpensive devices that drain off unwanted water from leaky basements are channeling millions of gallons, illegally, into the town's sewer lines and pushing the sewage treatment plant far over capacity.
The result of all the illegal sump pump hookups, officials said, is that discharge into the Mohawk River during rainy periods does not meet state environmental standards, and the town has been put on notice it must comply.
