New York apple producers should grow more apples for just plain eating and fewer for processing to compete effectively against Washington state, an industry official said Tuesday.
Ken Pollard, executive vice president of the Western New York Apple Growers Association, said some apple growers did well in 1986, but many farmers whose fruit goes to food processors had a tough year.
"There was severe frost damage in the spring. The growers who had a short crop of processing varieties had a very poor year," Pollard said at the group's annual meeting in Webster, Monroe County.
