Grace Paley may have been crowned by Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Wednesday as the Empire State's first official state author, but she didn't forget her neighborhood on 172nd Street in the Bronx where she grew up.
The 63-year-old grandmother, who required a small box behind the podium to address the 250 VIPs and guests at the Legislative Office Building ceremony, thanked Cuomo and others for the Edith Wharton Citation of Merit for fiction.
Paley praised the encouragement given her by her sister, family and neighborhood friends.
