Several thousand Libyan troops, backed by Soviet-made tanks and warplanes, launched a major attack Saturday in northern Chad in an effort to crush anti-Libyan resistance forces, U.S. officials said.
In Ndjamena, Chad's capital, the government radio said the Libyan offensive was being waged "with incredible violence" and it called for "a general mobilization."
The radio said the Libyan attack was principally directed against the Tibesti mountain towns of Bardai, Wour and Zouar, which have been occupied by Chadian forces that had rebelled against their former Libyan allies.
