The dramatic increase in the number of children in U.S. day-care facilities is presenting new problems in infectious disease control. Many day-care children are exposed to a wide variety of viruses, bacteria and parasites, although short-lived epidemics of diarrhea and the flu are more common.

"Today, younger and younger children are spending more time outside the home on a regular daily basis," says Michael T. Osterholm of the Minnesota Department of Health, an expert on day-care disease. The situation has created "a new era in the study of infectious diseases," he says.
