Jan. 24--The Wyomissing School District is seeking state approval to raise property taxes beyond an established rate of inflation.
School officials said the action is necessary because the district must pay for increases in health insurance and retirement benefits as well as the rising cost of special education.
Under Act 1 -- the state's property tax relief law -- the state sets a rate of inflation known as an index for each public school district. In Wyomissing, that index is 3.4 percent, which is the most that property taxes could be raised.
