They celebrated the past and prayed for the future.
About 300 participants, most of them Capital District residents of Pakistani heritage, gathered on the campus of the College of Saint Rose Saturday to celebrate the 39th anniversary of the independence of Pakistan. The nation won independence from Great Britain on Aug. 14, 1947.
They also came to pray for peace in their native land, a land marred in recent weeks by violent clashes between forces of President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq against those supporting Benazir Bhutto, daughter of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who was overthrown by Zia in 1977.
