A representative of the New York State Automobile Association said Monday that the 1.6 million-member organization has skidded away from its support of a 55-mph speed limit.

James J. McGowan, legislative chairman for the association that represents 16 auto clubs, said that while the organization's past position has been to support a 55-mph speed limit, "I think we've become aware of a need for change, especially on roads that have been engineered for a higher limit."
