While this summer's soggy weather has dampened vacations and weekend outings, the frequent rains have virtually extinguished forest and brush fires across New York state, officials said Monday.
An above-average summer rainfall has kept New York forests green and, despite lightning strikes from frequent thunderstorms, state officials have reported only two fires since June.
"The number of fire has been drastically reduced," said Ed Jacoby, superintendent of forest rangers, forests and fire management for the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
