Exploding pipe bombs, firebombed information booths, severed fuel lines, pellets fired at homes and armed guards with dogs are an unsettling part of this summer's tourist trade.

Underlying the violence is competition among operators of sight-seeing tours, tourist information booths, and hotels and motels in a city with an annual tourism payroll of $55.5 million.

Once known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is still a mecca for 10 million people a year who come to gaze at the thundering waterfalls.
