The leaders of Egypt and Israel, concluding the first summit between their nations in five years, agreed Friday that an international conference could help bring peace to the Middle East and set in motion the machinery to organize one.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres said they agreed to form a committee to decide who should attend such a conference, as well as when and where it might be held.

But while each leader spoke of the agreement, the formal joint statement issued at the end of Peres' 24-hour visit made no mention of it.
