Alin Derian, who was born in Syria and moved with her Syrian-born parents to Colonie in 1978, had always yearned to visit Armenia, "my mother country."
In August, through her youth group and the Armenian School at St. Peter Armenian Church in Watervliet, Derian learned of an opportunity to spend 20 days in a camp in Armenia. She applied to the national headquarters of the Armenian School in America in New York City and hoped.
It was a slim chance, one she almost lost until at the last minute, the fourth American teenager on the list canceled out and Derian was invited to pay the air fare and filled the space.
