Seventy staffers, including longtime correspondent George Herman whose assignments have included the White House beat and the "Face the Nation" broadcast, were told by CBS News Thursday that they had been cut from the payroll and most were given two weeks to clean up their affairs.
"The date that distresses all of us is here," said CBS News President Van Gordon Sauter in a memo to the news division. "The CBS News layoffs will be concluded by the end of the day."
CBS said the staff cuts were due to the CBS Broadcast Groups's declining advertising revenues and stagnant profits. CBS News will lose 20 other positions ...
