Much fussed-over "musical trends" often prove to be illusory, but it's hard to deny the veritable explosion in the field of chamber music. Thirty years ago there were only a couple of string quartets actually making a living at concertizing; today there seem to be dozens of them, and some of the youngest ones are playing circles around some of the veterans.
