Court officials shut down the Criminal Courthouse in Brooklyn Monday after employees demanded proof that there was no asbestos contamination in the 54-year- old building.
About 100 court officers walked out after discovering asbestos had been removed over the weekend from pipes on three floors of the 11-story building in downtown Brooklyn. The pipes had been exposed by ongoing renovations.
"We will not return to work until we get confirmation from an independent lab that the building is safe," said Dennis Quirk, president of the 950- member New York State Court Officers Association. The union represents uniformed court ...
