From the christening of the first USS Albany during the Spanish-American War to blackouts and air raids during World War II and anti- Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, the last 100 years in New York's capital city have been marked by the direct and indirect effects of war.
At the far end of Townsend Park, located at Northern Boulevard and Central and Washington avenues, there is a bronze statue of a soldier with a gun, poised for battle. Sculpted by the late Albany artist Dave Lithgow, the statue pays tribute to the city's role in the Spanish-American War.
