The city of Berlin has had a distinguished ballet history - one that spans three centuries and has absorbed a number of different influences.
"In Germany we are very open for everybody," says Gert Reinholm, director of the internationally acclaimed Berlin Ballet and a leading figure in German dance.
"We have not so many German dancers as a mix of different nationalities - English, American, Japanese. We are not so special like the Royal Ballet, which is very English, or like companies in Russia. We are different expressions."
