In the last sprint, Ron Darling finished last. Dead last, by a lot,from among half a dozen other New York Mets' pitchers left behind at Huggins-Stengel Field while the rest of the team played the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition game.
He finished last and heard about it. From Ed Lynch, Tom Gorman, Doug Sisk, and from equipment manager Charlie Samuels, who rode Darling all the way into the clubhouse for his lethargy.
"What do you want me to do, Chas," barked Darling over his shoulder, "run hard or pitch hard?"
