The AIDS virus stays infectious outside the human body for hours and sometimes days, an unpublished study shows.
The study, to be released Friday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, counters health authorities' assertions that the virus is fragile and dies quickly in the environment.
Dr. Lionel Resnick of Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and four co-workers found the AIDS virus remains infectious for more than a week in liquids at room temperature. It lives for three days, or more, when dried.
