A Vermont Indian squaw first discovered the sweetness of cooking with maple syrup - or so the legend goes.
Engrossed in other dutes, she forgot about the moose meat boiling in "sweet water" from a nearby tree. Finally realizing her lapse of memory, she hurriedly halted the cooking process and was relieved to find the meat unburned, resting in a deliciously sweet brown syrup. Her husband was so delighted with the meal that he spread the word. Other Indians began tapping similar trees. And so maple syrup was born.
