New York is one of eight finalists for the site of the $4.4 billion supercollider atom smasher, but the greater Rochester area selected has widespread residential opposition.
Gov. Mario M. Cuomo said Tuesday that he would petition federal Energy Secretary John S. Herrington to include a North Country site in St. Lawrence and Franklin counties in another preferred list to be announced in the coming weeks.
"The two sites share many attributes," Cuomo said, "and I have always felt the North Country site was well qualified to host this facility."
