Wyley Gates was sentenced Monday to the maximum term of 8 1/3 to 25 years in state prison after a judge said the 18-year-old's "hatred for his father" led him to conspire in the murders of his father and three other family members.
Spectators in the packed Columbia County Courtroom, many of them relatives of the victims, broke into a applause as Judge John G. Leaman pronounced the sentence.
Gates' lawyer, Charles J. Wilcox, later said he felt the severity of the sentence reflected "definitely an element of community pressure" brought to bear by those who had known the victims: Gates' father, Robert Gates Sr., ...
