Jan. 24--It's a move that adds insult to injury.

First, Omaha police officers spent 40 minutes last September chasing a city-owned ambulance that was stolen while rescue workers responded to a call.

Now, the city has to pay more than $15,000 for damage the thief caused after crashing the ambulance into a gate at Omaha Public Power District's north Omaha plant.

The City Council Tuesday approved paying $15,632 to OPPD to repair the damage.

"The entire metal gate had to be replaced," said OPPD spokesman Mike Jones. "It's a security concern to not have a functioning gate."
