With darker financial clouds gathering on the long-term care horizon, nursing homes are becoming a temporary place for the elderly to get well versus a place where people go to live out their remaining days.

More options for elder care, such as assisted living and in-home care, and a reduction in Medicaid reimbursements are forcing nursing homes to offer more short-term skilled rehabilitation services rather than focus on traditional long-term residential care, said Pete Van Runkle, president and CEO of the Ohio Health Care Association in Columbus.
