It might be called a rebirth of the stone age.

For the purveyors of those cold slabs of marble, granite and the like, the 1980s has been a decade of innovation, new technology and steady sales growth, according to industry spokesmen.

However, as is the case with many American industries, the building-stone producers are facing intense foreign competition, primarily from Italy.

"Buildings are being clad as never before in stone," said Dorothy Kender, executive vice president of the Building Stone Institute in New York City. "This alone will tell you the industry is growing."
