West German engineer Alfred Schmidt, who was kidnapped by Moslem gunmen in Beirut on Jan. 20, was released in the Lebanese capital Monday and turned over to the West German ambassador in Damascus.

Schmidt, 47, in a brief interview before he was taken to the airport for a flight to West Germany, said he had not been mistreated and was in good health.

Schmidt arrived in Bonn, West Germany, at about 12:20 a.m. and was taken to a government security base in the town of Hagelar about six miles away, German television network reported.
