Eight months after a black man fleeing a mob of white attackers was killed by a car in Howard Beach, Queens, four of the 12 young men accused of harrying him to his death go on trial today
on charges of murder or manslaughter.
The trial will be another in a series of racially charged, highly publicized cases that have contributed to black- white tensions in New York City over the past year.
Michael Griffith's death on Dec. 20 was denounced by Mayor Edward I. Koch as a lynching and touched off a series of retaliatory racial confrontations in the city.
