It was enough to make Ellen Mertine drop her divining rod and head for the Catskills.
When the West Milford, N.J., textile engraver read that Greene County would give a $100,000, jewel-encrusted bowling pin to the finder of a stone marked with Rip Van Winkle's initials, she recruited a friend, printed up special T- shirts, and began making the 90-minute drive to the mountains every other weekend.
