Evidence that heart disease can be reversed to a significant extent among patients taking cholesterol-lowering drugs and following a low-fat diet has been documented for the first time by a team of University of Southern California researchers.

The findings of the $5 million study, which was supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, not only provide new hope for people already following regimens to lower their cholesterol levels, but they are expected to spur new medical programs to protect people against heart disease, the nation's No. 1 killer.
