Bill Bordes learned to love birds while growing up in the Bronx.
But he didn't become serious about whittling them from wood until after his retirement in 1975 from the New York City Division of Forestry.
At that time he and his wife, Iris, headed north in search of "a quiet place." They have found it in a town house here where a stretch of woods begins at the kitchen door and the trees are alive with birds.
Inside there are more than 100 species of birds displayed, each created by Bordes' hands in a small work area in a spare bedroom on the second floor.
