Ted Welles, a man with a mission, stood in front of Martin Van Buren's house on a Sunday afternoon of changeable weather, handing out his 85-page book and talking to anyone who would listen.
Not that many of the 250 people at the 2 p.m. grand opening of Van Buren's Lindenwald house on Route 9H here needed to be persuaded of the eighth president's historical significance. But where Welles, the author of "Van Buren Wizard of O.K.," did not win a convert, he found an ally.
